Normally with this setup (foot on the ground) many people are getting ready to perform a single leg glute bridge, hip thrust, or the like.
However, this dead bug variation not only teaches complete tension on one side of the body but challenges complete isolation of movement at the hips through an normal plane of motion with the weighted apparatus ( a Kettlebell) making it challenging and a necessity for every athlete. For example, the soccer player that must plant one side of their body and exert force from the other side to kick a ball or perform a movement, in addition to a goalie. Another example, a hockey athlete that must take a shot or perform a movement on single leg. Another example, a race car driver that continually steps on the gas and brakes when needed. Hopefully you can get the picture.
The uniqueness of this movement manipulates the core/trunk (more research will be done ), and functionality through unprepared instability or tension not adequately used to make people strong stable, strong, and developing a powerful core and other muscles groups that fire at will mimicking powerful dynamic and unpredictable movements.
Therefore, I believe there is a two fold approach to the deadbug. Clinical (breathing/mechanical) and practical (dynamic/multidirectional simulation settings - mainly putting it all together). When athletes perform varying movements of the deadbug the core must work and spine must stabilize to control varying loads and manipulate movements avoiding catastrophes.
With the Kettlebell on the foot, it forces the muscles in the foot to activate but also provides a wonderful leg vvariation tha dead bug emphasizing the basics but also placing emphasis on the entire lumbo pelvic musculature.
More to come with the research.
